Muhammad's family moved from
Hashil, a village of about 800, to an neighboring city in order to provide
education for their children. While in school, Muhammad was inspired by a
story of Ezra Cornell, founder of Cornell University. After readying
Cornell's story, Muhammad turned to his brother and said, "When I grow up, I
will build schools."
Years later through his hard work and
perseverance, Muhammad's dream became reality. In 1997 Muhammad, now a
well-educated engineer living in Washington State, built his first school in
Hashil. The small tin shed elementary school was the first school in Hashil.
A few years later the tin shed blew away in a cyclone. In its place,
Muhammad constructed a sturdy brick and mortar elementary school which holds
nearly 200 students.
The Poorest
of the Poor Education Foundation (POPEF) was established in 2001 to support
operations of these schools in Hashil, Bangladesh. Today, POPEF, under the
direction of its chair and founder, operates elementary and middle schools
in Hashil, Bangladesh. Over 500 students are enrolled in these schools with
curriculum that emphasizes literacy, math, and science. Students at the
POPEF schools continue to score extremely well in nation-wide tests and most
importantly, no family is forced to move in order to find good education.
