In April and June, 2005, Board President Muhammad Islam
visited Hashil for school business. Major accomplishments during those
visits include completion of the kitchen, a dining room for students and
teachers and addition of an elementary teachers’ room. In addition,
two lavatories and septic systems were finished - one for the girls and one
for the boys. |

Three teachers from
Wiley Elementary School accompanied Muhammad on his June visit. Those who
went include Linda Rowe, Pamela Knutson and Gerry Morrow (Gerry’s son,
Justin, accompanied her). During their visit, they trained teachers, taught
students and set up a library for all students to use. Most of the books in
the library were supplied by these three teachers.
During Muhammad’s last visit, he learned that after
more than five years with no raises, the Bangladesh government increased all
teachers’ salaries by 40 to 50%. These raises became effective in July
2005. On top of that, the government is in the process of hiring teachers;
something that had not happened during the past five years. These events are
having a direct impact on our ability to retain the quality teachers in our
schools. At this time, the Board is exploring options to address this
issue.
Scholastic highlights since our last newsletter.
All 27 of our 10th grade students took the national examinations in March
2005, and fared very well again. 18 students earned A’s, four students
earned B’s, two students earned C’s and unfortunately three did not pass.
It is noteworthy that two students who did not pass in 2004
graduated this time around. Note that our passing rate is 89%, compared
with the national average of 51%.
Our fifth grade students took a national exam in
December 2004, and two of our students received two of four awarded
scholarships in the school district. Five of our eighth grade students also
received scholarships.
Our annual fundraising events are currently scheduled
for September 24th (a luncheon) and October 1st (a breakfast).
