January 2005 Newsletter

During December, 2005 six individuals traveled to Hashil to work with the students and teachers at the school.  Those who went include Muhammad and Monwara Islam, Linda Row, Alex Price, John and Dianna Propson.
Activities conducted during that visit include the following:
  • Led workshop on teamwork with teachers and secondary students

  • Conducted workshop on four-cycle engines with secondary students

  • Held creative problem solving competition with the secondary students

  • Conducted English language workshops with elementary students

  • Introduced action games and puzzles to the elementary students

  • Taught crocheting, making bracelets, necklaces & scarves to the secondary students

  • Conducted school improvement brainstorming sessions with students and teachers

  • Worked with the students painting the interior of elementary classrooms

  • Set up two computers for the school and introduced various software programs

  • Documented the visit and activities utilizing digital photography

While in Bangladesh, visitors observed the Victory Day Parade in Jamalpur, where the POPEF middle and elementary school drill teams competed in the marching and drill events.  Out of approximately 30 participating teams, our schools were awarded three first place plaques and one second place plaque.  No other school present received more than one award.

Other activities which occurred at the school include:

  • Introduced gymnastics to the elementary students, and formed a POPEF gymnastics team  (watch for them in the Olympics 8 years from now!)

  • Completed second story and new middle school additions, including painting exterior

  • Increased the number of students per class in grades 6, 7, 8 and 9

  • Held testing for 570 students who applied for 67 open positions

  • Completed painting the exterior of the elementary and middle schools

  • Participated in the mandatory fifth grade class exam; 31 of the 37 students received A’s, and 6 received B’s

  • All visitors came away with an appreciation for the progress being made at the schools.  Fortunately, the earthquake and tsunami did not have an adverse impact on the schools, nor the country as a whole.
