Update on the progress of
the POPEF schools:
Board President, Muhammad, and his wife, Monwara,
spent three weeks in Hashil in mid December and early January to tend to
the schools’ operation, and following is a report of that trip. The
construction of 2,800 square feet on the second floor of the middle school
building is almost complete. This new construction includes a meeting
hall/conference room and living quarters for international visitors.
Boundary wall construction, about 2,300 feet in length, will be completed
by December 2004.
Victory Day Parade:
The POPEF schools participated in the Bangladesh Victory Day Parade in
Jamalpur District. This district includes 391 high schools (through tenth
grade). Our school won the third place trophy!
District and National Examinations:
The POPEF elementary school sent 50% of our fifth grade students to take
the district-wide scholarship examination in December 2003. The
Bangladesh government encourages only the top 20% of the fifth graders
take the examination. In addition, some of our eighth graders took the
eighth grade district-wide scholarship examination.
Our students who have completed the tenth grade in
December 2003 are preparing for the national examinations in March 2004.
The POPEF school teachers are voluntarily providing review materials and
instruction to these students.
New Student Admissions:
For school year 2004, over 400 students took the written admission test to
fill available positions in grades one through nine. Based on the test
results, 51 were admitted to the various classes.
New Teachers:
Twenty-two candidates appeared at the teachers’ test for three open
positions but only one teacher could be hired because of our very high
teaching requirement standards demanded for POPEF schools. Another test
will be conducted in May-June.
Website:
You can now visit the POPEF schools on our website at
www.popef.org. The board would like to thank Ellen Tomaszewski for
her work in putting this website together.
